*This position can start anytime to train under current Director – latest start date August 1st, 2025.

Job Title:  Director Technology

Department:   Technology

Education Level and Certification:   Bachelor’s degree or higher required.  Degree in computer science, instructional technology or business preferred.  Experience in technology and experience in a school setting is preferred. 

Reports To:   ESU 13 Administrator

Terms of Employment: 240 day / Schedule 4

Performance Responsibilities and Job Tasks  

The Director of Technology leads ESU 13’s information technology operations, ensuring 

efficient and effective technical support services for the organization and member school 

districts. The Director of Technology may delegate duties but retains ultimate 

responsibility and accountability for the department’s performance. Key responsibilities 

include:

  1. Strategic Leadership
    1. Serve as the leader of the ESU’s technology department and as a positive contributing member of the  ESU 13 leadership team.
    2. Develop and implement a comprehensive technology plan aligned with ESU 13’s mission and goals
    3. Provide visionary leadership for all technology initiatives, both short- and long-term
    4. Stay informed about educational technology trends and relevant legislation
    5. Participate in board meetings and committees as requested by the ESU 13 Administrator
    6. Collaborate with stakeholders to identify and address technology needs
  2. Infrastructure and Operations Management
    1. Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of IT infrastructure and systems
    2. Ensure network security, data protection, and disaster recovery procedures
    3. Manage software licensing, hardware inventory, and technology asset lifecycle
    4. Coordinate E-Rate application and submission for ESU 13 and member districts.
  3. Western Nebraska Distance Learning Consortium (WNDLC)  Leadership
    1. Assist in the design and development of courses needed and courses to be offered on the distance learning network.
    2. Create and update the master schedule utilizing scheduling software
    3. Identify future needs of the WNDLC and coordinate grant activities to support the consortium’s needs
    4. Coordinate training opportunities for teachers in the WNDLC schools and post-secondary institutions.
  4. Team Leadership and Professional Development
    1. Lead, develop and evaluate the IT staff team
    2. Design and implement professional development programs for effective technology use
    3. Support staff and students in technology integration and troubleshooting
  5. Budget and Resource Management
    1. Prepare, monitor, and administer the technology department budget
    2. Oversee the procurement process for technology equipment and software
    3. Optimize resource allocation and cost-effectiveness of technology investments
  6. Innovation and Continuous Improvement
    1. Research and evaluate emerging technologies for potential implementation
    2. Continuously assess and improve IT services and support processes
    3. Develop and implement strategies to enhance staff productivity and student learning through technology
  7. Compliance and Reporting
    1. Ensure adherence to relevant laws, regulations, and policies
    2. Prepare and present reports on technology initiatives, performance, and challenges
    3. Manage data systems to meet reporting requirements
  8. Stakeholder Engagement
    1. Collaborate with ESU 13 leadership, staff, and member districts to align technology services with organizational needs
    2. Represent ESU 13 on relevant state and local committees and organizations
    3. Communicate technology-related information to all stakeholders effectively
  9. Relationship with ESU 13 Administrator
    1. Attend and participate in Board meetings and its committees as requested by the ESU 13 Administrator.
    2. Submit to the ESU 13 Administrator explanation of any proposed procedure that would involve either departure from established policy or the expenditure of substantial sums.
    3. Act on own discretion if emergency action is necessary in any matter not covered by Board policy, report such action to the ESU 13 Administrator as soon as practicable, and recommend policy in order to provide guidance in the future.
    4. Make a continuous study of the development and needs of the school. Inform and advise the ESU 13 Administrator about the programs, practices and challenges of the school.
    5. Keep informed of current curricular and educational trends and practices, as well as proposed legislation impacting the ESU 13, and inform the ESU 13 Administrator of significant developments in these areas. 
    6. Provide long term planning to guide Board policy development, present recommendations for the adoption or revision of Board policies, communicate Board policies to personnel, students, and the public, and ensure through delegation to staff that all policies of the Board are implemented.
    7. Serve as a leader to assist the ESU 13 Administrator to develop a vision for the ESU 13 and a comprehensive long-range plan. Recommend to the ESU 13 Administrator, annually, ESU-wide goals and monitor and report on the progress toward achieving established goals. 
    8. Lead ESU 13 Committee work as requested by the ESU 13 Administrator.
    9. Confer periodically with professional and lay groups concerning the school programs and transmit to the ESU 13 Administrator and leadership team suggestions gained from such conferences.
    10. Assist in reviewing and interpreting government codes, and developing programs to ensure adherence to codes and facility safety, security, and maintenance. 

Required Knowledge

The Technology Director is to possess and effectively utilize knowledge in the following 

areas:

  1. Computers and Electronics—Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming. 
  2. Administration and Management—Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

FLSA Status:   Exempt.

  1. Executive exemption:  The primary duty of the employee is the management of a department or subdivision.  The employee customarily and regularly directs the work of two or more other employees and has authority to hire or fire other employees or the employee’s recommendations as to hiring, firing, promotion, or other change of status of other employees are given particular weight. 
  2. Administrative exemption:  The employee has the primary duty of performing office or non-manual work directly related to the management of general business operations of the ESU 13.  The employee customarily and regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment or has a primary duty of performing administrative functions directly related to academic instruction or training in the ESU 13 or a department or subdivision.

Essential Functions:   The essential functions of the Director of Alternative Education position include: (1) regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job; (2) the ability to perform the identified tasks and to possess and utilize the identified knowledge, skills, and abilities and to perform the identified work activities; and, (3) the ability to perform the following identified physical requirements.
