Essential Functions

  • Operates power mowing equipment and other power equipment necessary to maintain the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as tree spades, dump trucks and snowplows to maintain roads, streets and sidewalks on the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
  • Performs a variety of nonskilled building and grounds work.
  • Maintains buildings on the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
  • In the absence of the racetrack maintainer, operates all track equipment, graders, dump trucks, road graders, water truck and track conditioner to maintain multiple use racetrack.
  • Provides guidance and direction to new employees, student workers and/or seasonal employees.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school plus one year of maintenance work experience preferably associated with the building and mechanical trades and/or heavy equipment operation.


Conditions of Employment

  • Requires completion of a name-based background screening and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires the ability to successfully pass a preemployment physical.
  • Requires ability to travel in performance of duties. Requires appropriate, valid commercial driver’s license or the ability to obtain one. Must be Class B or higher.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires ability to use hand and power tools, operate heavy equipment or perform semiskilled manual work in a safe manner.
